Why AI-DDAIS Exists
The Problem With Arriving Late
When the first waves of the global digital revolution arrived, Africa was frequently positioned more as an observer and adopter than an active participant in shaping how these technologies developed.
By the time African content creators began building sustainable livelihoods on platforms such as YouTube or TikTok, others had already established mature ecosystems. Similarly, by the time businesses and workers across the continent began engaging more seriously with artificial intelligence, many of the early patterns of use, design, and deployment had already been set elsewhere.
The challenge with always entering at a later stage is that many of the core decisions have already been made elsewhere. The systems, standards, and design choices are often established before different contexts are fully part of the conversation.
Delayed participation limits influence.
When systems are already mature, there is less space to shape how they are designed, used, scaled, and governed.
Context Matters
Technology Built Elsewhere Does Not Always Fit African Realities
Digital systems and AI tools are often designed with assumptions about infrastructure, user behaviour, language, culture, and working environments.
In practice, these assumptions do not always align with the diversity of African realities, from informal and hybrid economies to the way people communicate, trade, work, learn, and solve problems.
Our Response
Working Inside the Gap Between Design and Reality
The African Institute for Digitalization, Data, AI and Society was formed as a response to these patterns, and to the realisation that technological change is not only about access to tools. It is also about the ability to engage with how those tools are designed, interpreted, and applied in different contexts.
In many cases, there remains a gap between how technologies are developed and the environments in which they are ultimately used. AI-DDAIS works within that gap, focusing on understanding how technologies are built and how they are experienced in practice.
We work with organisations, innovators, and institutions to improve how digital systems are understood, conceptualized, introduced, adopted, and adapted within real-world settings.
We Study the Misalignments
AI-DDAIS examines where technology and lived experience do not match. This may include user behaviour, adoption barriers, cultural context, organisational readiness, language, data gaps, or implementation conditions.
We Map Practical Pathways
Our work also identifies where technology and social realities can work together more effectively, helping institutions and innovators make stronger decisions before, during, and after implementation.

Our approach is built on the belief that meaningful and responsible advancement in digitalization and artificial intelligence will be achieved more efficiently when we work as a continent.
